Obama may visit climate talks, notching up action

President Obama may visit the climate talks in Copenhagen this December, bringing even more emphasis to a new regime. He said as much in Europe this week:

“I’m actually more optimistic than I was about America being able to take leadership on this issue, joining Europe, which over the last several years has been ahead of us on this issue,” Obama said in this AFP report.

“We are seeing progress in Congress around energy legislation that would set up for the first time in the United States a cap and trade system. That process is moving forward in ways that I think if you had asked political experts two or three months ago would have seemed impossible.”

If he goes, he will be the first president to join climate talks since 1992.

That’s good news for innovative companies like Xunlight, which has come up with a thin-film solar panel that can be rolled up then unfurled on roofs, building facades, even cars. The MIT Technology Review quotes the founder saying they can be stored in a backpack and rolled out to juice up a laptop.

Wonder if we’ll see any at work in Copenhagen.
