Cell phone ratings from an unusual source

Companies face reviews and critiques all the time — but in the case of cell phones, an environmental group is raising the bar by rating 1,200 cell phones based on radiation emissions.

This comes from Environmental Working Group, which also evaluated the state of science on radiation risks from phones. Although the results are still less than conclusive, EWG measured emissions and came up with a list of the worst and best phones. Then it added a handy widget for people to evaluate their own phone.

EWG, which has raised consumer awareness on issues such as pesticides, also has a number tips for cell phone users, including using headsets and the speaker phone and texting instead of talking to avoid radiation.

But I especially liked the tip to “listen.” Apparently, radiation is only emitted when you talk. Such advice might be especially welcome for some users on the other end of the line.
