Japanese auto manufacturers expended fewer engineering hours to bring new product concepts to market than did their U.S. and European counterparts, although the gap did narrow from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. (Note: The vertical axis is the difference between actual project hours and the expected number for an average project of similar complexity. A negative value indicates better-than-expected productivity whereas positive values mean that companies are faring worse.)
