What does it take to build a business case for sustainability?

Last spring, Jason Jay, sustainability expert at the MIT Sloan School of Management, spoke with the sustainability chiefs at Stonyfield and SAP to hear how both companies are approaching the problem of understanding product footprints.

Video of the 48-minute chat is now available in the MIT SMR archive.

Wood Turner, vice president of sustainability innovation at Stonyfield Farm, talks about the business pressures and aspirations that motivated the dairy company to calculate environmental impacts from all aspects of its production — from manufacturing and distribution to consumer use.

Peter Graf, chief sustainability officer at SAP, talks about the value of taking a “lifecycle approach” to analyzing environmental impact. “This is about increasing profitability today to use this product-level information to drive efficiencies in the value chain,” he says.
