How Twitter Users Can Generate Better Ideas

New research suggests that employees with a diverse Twitter network — one that exposes them to people and ideas they don’t already know — tend to generate better ideas.

Innovations never happen without good ideas. But what prompts people to come up with their best ideas? It’s hard to beat old-fashioned, face-to-face networking. Even Steve Jobs, renowned for his digital evangelism, recognized the importance of social interaction in achieving innovation. In his role as CEO of Pixar Animation Studios (a role he held in addition to being a cofounder and CEO of Apple Inc.), Jobs instructed the architect of Pixar’s new headquarters to design physical space that encouraged staff to get out of their offices and mingle, particularly with those with whom they normally wouldn’t interact. Jobs believed that serendipitous exchanges fueled innovation.1

A multitude of empirical studies confirm what Jobs intuitively knew.2 The more diverse a person’s social network, the more likely that person is to be innovative. A diverse network provides exposure to people from different fields who behave and think differently. Good ideas emerge when the new information received is combined with what a person already knows. But in today’s digitally connected world, many relationships are formed and maintained online through public social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Increasingly, employees are using such platforms for work-related purposes.3

Studying Twitter Networks

Can Twitter make employees more innovative? In particular, does having a greater diversity of virtual Twitter connections mean that good ideas are more likely to surface, as in the face-to-face world? To answer this question, we used a technique called organizational network analysis (ONA) to create visual representations of employee Twitter networks. We studied ten employee groups across five companies in a range of industries. (See “About the Research.”)

For example, EMC Corporation, a leading company in the information storage and infrastructure industry that is based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, was one of the companies we studied. We analyzed hundreds of ideas submitted by EMC employees as part of their internal idea management system and correlated that behavior with Twitter usage. Here’s what we found.

First, Twitter users and non-users generally submitted the same number of ideas.

    Hi there. I found the article really interesting but in parts I was a little confused on the final results.

    It seems there was
    1. An initial finding that twitter users produced better rated ideas?
    2. That there was no main effect on ideas for the diversity of network measure (Compactness Ratio)?
    3. A separate measure of ‘absorptive capacity’ for 205 twitter using interviewees however did differentiate users ability to produce better rated ideas?

    The question I was left with is whether there was an interaction effect between network diversity and absorptive capacity found as well?

    This is what would be needed to conclude anything about the network diversity and the size of the effect would also be quite important to mention.

    I wish that was true Amarendra. Maybe I infered too much, but the comparison is not between the quality of group and individual ideas, but about the Impact of having a deep and varied network on an individual’s quality of ideas.

    The variety of ideas it what puts Twitter users ahead – this may often disturb other peers or colleagues, as is typically not the norm.

    The best ideas, my own experience over the years, come from when ideas/points from diverse interest fields merge in a single idea (such as ballet performance, its choreography, and how this relates to design thinking and problem solving in a transparent setting).

    This study provides the needed evidence the new social business evangelists and lagers need to demonstrate social media has grown up. The idea that the uptake of social media presents new opportunities for connecting to customers and building brand awareness is well accepted. Completion of the transition to a fully emergent social business requires recognising that the value of social in marketing and customer connection is only one facet of social business. The more profound value of social may be in creating a more agile and adaptable company that is better able to create opportunity and avoid stagnation in a rapidly evolving business, technology and cultural environment.

    This is a tad simplistic. Some great ideas happen while people are hiking in the mountains off grid and then take hours or inspired solitary work to bring to fruition.

    Some ideas get generated talking to people. Some dont.

    And some people like open plan offices but, as recent research has shown, more people dont like open plan offices because the constant distraction stops them working. This seems a bit normative and simplistic. I cant imagine how the internet would have been invented by people looking at hundreds of twitter feeds all day.
