The annual MIT Sloan CIO Symposium will take place Wednesday, May 18, 2011, from 7:30am to 7pm.

Panels include “New Trends in Cyber Security and Privacy Protection”; “Mobility — The Next CIO Innovation Opportunity”; “Collective Intelligence and Social Networks”; “Workforce 2015 — Building the Organization of the Future”; and “The Evolving CIO Role in Cloud and Mobile Computer Environment.” The program (PDF) has all the details.

“In the rapidly evolving digital business world, companies will be forced to become much more sophisticated in their methods for capturing, storing and analyzing data,” notes semanticweb.com in a preview story about the event.

Says Graham G. Rong, chair of the symposium, in the semanticweb story: “Through the intelligent mash-up based on contextual information and semantic resource description, the semantic web enables business users to have an information dashboard of data — from various sources of different types and locations in the cloud.”

MIT professors and researchers Erik Brynjolfsson, Andrew McAfee, Jeanne W. Ross, Sandy Pentland, David Clark, Michael A. Cusumano, Thomas W. Malone, Ted Piepenbrock, and Glen L. Urban are among the speakers scheduled.

MIT Sloan Management Review editor-in-chief Michael S. Hopkins will be moderating a session on “Enterprise Analytics -> Business Values,” with Rock Gnatovich, SVP and COO of Spotfire, TIBCO Software Inc.; Brad Peterson, CIO, Charles Schwab; Sid Probstein, CTO, Attivio; and Renée Romano Nocker, Director of Technology Product Marketing, SAS.

Also worth noting: The CIO Symposium has announced ten finalists for its 2011 Innovation Showcase. The companies “represent cutting edge B2B solutions that combine both value and innovation to Enterprise IT.” They are: Apperian, a mobile application management company; CloudBees, the “first platform as a service that lets companies build, test and deploy Java web applications in the cloud”; Modo Labs, maker of mobile software; Opscode, a service for cloud infrastructure automation; Hadapt, whose adaptive analytical platform performs analytics on structured and unstructured data; Performable, a marketing software firm; Rypple, which provides a social interface for employees; Virtual Bridges, which combines online, offline, and remote branch VDI for access to virtual desktops; Unidesk, a software that creates virtual desktops; and xPeerient, a networking platform to streamline the process of buying and selling enterprise IT solutions.
